Heart worms, technically known as Dirofilaria immitis, are small parasites that often infect their host through a mosquito bite and then spread from one animal to another. Several wild animals, like coyotes, wolves, and even sea lions, are affected by heartworms and sometimes people can become infected by the parasites as well. It was later discovered that mosquitoes actually bite canines in the stomach area where the hair is fine. With this knowledge, it is now known that all types of dogs are susceptible to the canine heartworm disease. It is also common for dogs to suffer from mosquito bites on their ears or their mouth and nose because these areas typically have little hair as well.

How Are Canine Heart Worms Treated?

When a canine heartworm infection is noticed early, a series of chemical treatments can be used to treat the disease. These treatments are administered over an extended period so the worms are killed slowly, rather than all at once. The dead heartworms remain in the dogs body and usually take several weeks to be absorbed. Too many of these carcasses can create serious, often deadly, complications. Any type of chemical therapy can be dangerous to your dog as well if it is not handled by a professionally licensed veterinarian. Approximate Adult Size

There are three sizes of the American Eskimo Dog, Toy, Miniature and Standard. The Toy runs from 9 to 12 inches to the withers (tallest point of the back), the Miniature runs 12 to 15 inches to the withers and the Standard runs 15 inches to19 inches to the withers.

Special Health Considerations

She should visit the veterinarian several times in the first year for shots, boosters and check up. Then, as an adult, she should visit the veterinarian yearly for shots and check up. As she gets older, six years and on, she should visit the veterinarian twice a year for check ups and shots. Remember; avoid feeding your dog sweets.

Grooming

The Mastiff has a short haired, smooth coat. She should be brushed regularly. Brushing will help her maintain a clean and healthy coat and help you keep a closer eye on her health and strengthen your emotional bond with her.

Her teeth should be brushed at least twice a week with toothpaste and toothbrush designed for dogs. Brushing removes the accumulation of plaque and tartar which can cause cavities (rarely) and periodontal disease. The Gopher Tortoise, Nature's Landlord or maybe the Landlord of the Sand hills, either way it's definitely better than the moniker that I would probably end up with. The Gopher Tortoise is an obligate burrower with very stout and strong limbs. Its' claws are wide and flat with small protective scales extending up the tortoises shovel like front legs.

Their burrows can be up to 40 feet long and 10 feet deep, descending at a 30 degree angle. The width of the burrow is usually the length of tortoise, allowing for it to turn around in any section of the burrow. The male Gopher Tortoise can have an average of 17 burrows while the female maintains an average of 9, but it's common to have more than one tortoise sharing the same burrow. Fellow tortoises are not the only species that share the burrows, in fact not even close. The title Nature's Landlord comes from the fact up to 360 different animal species seek refuge in the tortoises burrow.

The list includes the gopher frog, the Florida mouse, opossum, indigo snake, pine snake, armadillo, burrowing owl, gopher cricket, scarab beetles, the Florida Scrub-jay and many others. The Gopher Tortoise is cold blooded averaging 10 inches long and up to 9lbs, its' life span ranges from 40- 60 years but in captivity can live more than 100 years. This particular tortoise belongs to a group of land tortoises that originated in North America nearly 60 million years ago and out of the nearly 23 species known to have existed on this continent as little as 4 species remain today. Once a year the female tortoise will lay an average of 6 eggs depending on their body size and it takes approximately 100 days for the eggs to incubate.

The gopher tortoises have temperature dependent sex determination, if the temperature of the sand is above 30 degrees the hatchlings will be female and below 30 degrees they will be male. The male tortoise has a concaved plastron (bottom shell) with a protruding plastron under the tortoises chin while the female's bottom shell is perfectly flat.

When the tortoises head and neck are completely retracted into the shell, the tortoise is generally safe from most predators. Although the tortoise has some natural threats like disease and climate, humans are the main cause for the decline of this species. In a list ranging from road mortalities to habitat destruction human interaction has played a major role in bringing this gentle herbivore closer to extinction. Florida has the gopher tortoise present in all 67 counties which has it on the list as a species of special concern.

Other states like Georgia, Louisiana. And Alabama have them listed as a threatened species but South Carolina and Mississippi have the tortoise on the endangered species list. The Gopher tortoise is an important part of the ecosystem and some of the species that share its burrows could not exist without them. 4) I highly recommend kennel training dogs so that they have a safe, comfortable place to be when you are gone. I have had dogs who were kennel trained and dogs you weren't and I have to say that I would never have a dog that wasn't kennel trained again. They like the safety of the kennel and even if they are house trained, if you are gone for many hours or they don't feel well, then having them confined to a kennel really saves your sanity.

In 1967, the government of South Africa minted the gold krugerrand to increase the marketing of South African gold. Although the krugerrand is considered as legal currency, it is seldom used for that purpose. Instead, it has become a favorite of coin collectors all over the world, known as "medal coins." This was the first coin to be valued at the monetary value of gold. For example, a U.S. silver dollar is worth exactly one dollar unless it is unusual in some way that makes it more valuable to collectors. The krugerrand was originally a one-ounce piece of 22 carat gold with no monetary value imprinted on it; its value is based upon the market value of gold that frequently fluctuates. Today krugerrands are made in a variety of weights, including half-ounce, quarter-ounce and one-tenth ounce. Since the krugerrand is considered to be a form of gold bullion, it was once illegal for American citizens to own them privately. But when the South African government declared them as legal tender, that prohibition ceased. Still, because of the practice of apartheid in South Africa, many Western countries made them illegal to import until South African political changes occurred in 1990-1994. An executive order to this effect was signed into law by President Ronald Reagan.

The krugerrand is easily identified by its picture of Paul Kruger on one side, a Boer resistance leader and four-term President of South Africa. One of the greatest challenges for the event organiser is to arrange a variety of activities that will appeal to everyone in the group. Obviously it is impossible to choose activities that will appeal to everyone, but it is important to have variety so that everyone will have something to enjoy.

The most common format for outdoor participation events is to have a range of activities. A group of thirty might be divided into five teams to attempt five different activities.

There is a general feeling that shooting and motorised activities are enjoyed more by men than by women. This is by no means a rule and there are always exceptions, but if an event is dominated by this sort of activity some people will enjoy it more than others.
